Red Cross Slovenia celebrates 160 years of humanitarian work

The Red Cross in Slovenia is celebrating its 160th anniversary of operation. To mark this milestone, a series of events will be held in Brežice, including a central ceremonial academy at the Posavje Museum. The academy will feature Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar as the keynote speaker and honorary patron.

Additional activities in Brežice include the 32nd national assessment of first aid team readiness. The organization's history in the region dates back to 1866, with roots in women's and men's aid societies that operated through World War I. The modern Red Cross Slovenia was re-established in 1944.

Today also marks the International Day of Charity, a date chosen by the United Nations in memory of Mother Teresa. The Red Cross Slovenia currently operates through 56 regional units with a volunteer force of between 15,000 and 17,000 people, providing annual assistance to approximately 100,000 individuals through humanitarian aid, blood donation drives, and first aid training.
