Red Cross warns summer blood supply shortage in Austria and Germany

On World Blood Donation Day, the Red Cross in Salzburg highlighted that summer vacation periods strain the country's blood reserves, as donors are fewer while hospitals continue to need a constant flow of fresh blood components.

The German Red Cross in the Neumarkt district also cautioned that seasonal declines in donations create a predictable shortfall, stressing that maintaining a 3‑to‑5‑day inventory is essential for trauma care, surgery and maternal health. Both organisations are urging the public to donate now to keep emergency services fully stocked.
