Red deer rutting season begins near Grande Fagne
The rutting season for red deer is currently underway near the Grande Fagne area at the Belle-Croix intersection. According to Manuel Lemaire, a forester from the Malmedy Forestry Office, the mating period begins in mid-September and lasts until mid-October.
Because female deer are fertile for only a few hours once a year, observers are urged to follow strict guidelines to avoid disrupting the reproductive process. Recommended behaviors include staying on designated paths, avoiding loud noises, refraining from using mobile phones, and not using flashlights to illuminate the animals. Dogs are prohibited during this time.
Violations of these rules carry financial penalties. Leaving the paths can result in a 150 euro fine, while disturbances within the protected area can lead to a 250 euro fine. To increase the chances of hearing the deer's calls without causing distress, experts suggest visiting during the early morning or twilight hours while maintaining a respectful distance.
