Spain railway investigations focus on Adif works and electrical stability

Investigations into recent fatal railway accidents in Spain are examining infrastructure integrity and power supply stability on the Madrid-Sevilla high-speed line.

In the Adamuz accident, which resulted in 46 deaths, judicial experts have identified new track deformations near the crash site. These anomalies were found at switches 631 and 632, which were part of the same renovation project as the switch involved in the initial tragedy. Experts have requested that the judge demand all documentation regarding works performed by Adif both before and after the accident, noting that these new deformations appeared shortly after the renovation works were officially received.

Separately, Red Eléctrica Española (REE) has denied allegations of chronic instability in the Spanish electrical system. This follows claims by engineer José Luis García Guglieri, who suggested that electrical instability might cause frequent failures in the LZB automatic safety system. Guglieri argued that insufficient energy was available during the Urda accident on October 28. REE maintains that the energy generation mix does not inherently determine the quality or security of the power supply and that such claims do not reflect the reality of the Spanish electrical system.
