Red Feather Community Chest faces crisis over 250 million yen in missing funds
The Red Feather Community Chest is facing a crisis of trust following the discovery of approximately 250 million yen in unaccounted funds at the Hokkaido Community Chest. A former administrative director is suspected of repeated embezzlement since around 2020, highlighting significant weaknesses in internal oversight and accounting controls.
The scandal is directly impacting the organization’s annual fundraising campaign, which began on October 1. Several major corporations have adjusted their involvement; for instance, Aeon has decided to skip cooperation across its nationwide group of stores to prioritize customer trust. Conversely, All Nippon Airways (ANA) has pledged to continue its support, including placing donation boxes in airports.
Local fundraising efforts, such as those in Eniwa City, Hokkaido, report a difficult atmosphere. While some citizens continue to show support, organizers have noted a decline in participation and a sense of public frustration. Welfare organizations and NPOs that rely on these subsidies expressed deep concern that the loss of funds and public trust could jeopardize essential services for people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
