Red imported fire ants discovered at Sydney logistics hub

A nest of red imported fire ants was discovered at the Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre in Sydney’s inner west. The ants were identified by Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry officials using a lure. Officials believe the ants were likely imported via an overseas shipping container rather than spreading from existing infestations in south-east Queensland.

The nest has been destroyed, and specialist detection dog teams have conducted surveillance around the hub without finding additional nests. Authorities are now shifting focus to inspecting and treating properties within a 500-metre radius and searching for nests within a 2-kilometre radius. Local businesses dealing in soil, turf, or building materials will be contacted to assist in identification and treatment efforts.

Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty stated that while the species is highly invasive, successful eradication has occurred in New South Wales previously. The Invasive Species Council noted that if fire ants become established across Australia, they could cost the economy up to $2 billion annually, prompting calls for increased funding for national biosecurity and eradication programs.
