Red light therapy expands in wellness and healthcare sectors

Red light therapy is seeing increased adoption across the wellness and healthcare sectors, utilized for applications ranging from skincare and anti-aging to chronic pain management and wound healing.

Mechanistically, the therapy involves applying low levels of red light to the body. This light travels deep into the skin to stimulate mitochondria, specifically through the absorption of light by cytochrome c oxidase. This process enhances cellular energy production, which can improve cell function, promote healing, and increase blood circulation. Additionally, the therapy may help reduce inflammation by lowering inflammatory cytokines.

Clinical applications include boosting hair growth by increasing nutrient and oxygen delivery to the scalp, and increasing collagen production to improve skin elasticity. The market for these devices is expanding to include various forms, such as hair growth caps, full-body blankets, infrared mats, and PEMF mats.
