Red lynx cub born for the first time at Chapultepec Conservation Center

The Chapultepec Wildlife Conservation Center in Mexico City has recorded the first birth of a red lynx (Lynx rufus) at the facility. The cub was born in July to a ten-year-old pair currently residing in the center's Arid Biome.

The parents were also born in Mexico City conservation centers: the mother at Los Coyotes and the father at San Juan de Aragón. The cub is currently under the continuous supervision of veterinarians, biologists, and caregivers to monitor its development.

As the cub grows, it will gradually transition from a milk-only diet to specialized solid foods, including chicken, quail, and formulated puppy food. While the red lynx is classified as ‘Least Concern’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), local populations can face challenges from urban expansion and habitat changes.
