Red Movilidad launches pilot program to combat fare evasion

The Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications (MTT), through the Metropolitan Public Transport Directorate (DTPM), has launched a pilot program to combat fare evasion within the Red Movilidad system in Santiago. The initiative involves the deployment of 90 anti-evasion agents working in teams of three per bus.

The pilot will initially focus on route 107, operated by STU, which connects Peñalolén to Huechuraba and traverses 13 communes. This specific route was selected due to an evasion rate of 62.7%, significantly higher than the Red Movilidad average of 37.4% recorded in the first half of 2026. The route serves approximately 13,000 passengers daily.

Agents will operate during peak hours—06:30 to 08:30 and 17:00 to 20:00—on 21 daily frequencies from Monday to Friday. Unlike inspectors, these agents serve a preventive and deterrent role; they are not authorized to issue fines or sanctions but will instead encourage passengers to validate their trips at the vehicle entrances. The program is expected to cost approximately $100 million CLP and will serve as a test to determine if the model should be expanded to other routes.
