Red Rebane declares bankruptcy after 14 years

Red Rebane, a German manufacturer known for its hand-sewn backpacks and bags featuring a signature red fox logo, has filed for bankruptcy. The Schwerin District Court initiated insolvency proceedings at the end of August 2026.

Co-founders Christian Karius and Stephan Rodewald cited several economic factors for the company's collapse, including rising energy and material costs, higher labor expenses, and difficulties recruiting skilled workers. The company's financial struggles intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic when it attempted to pivot to producing protective masks, which resulted in unsold inventory and increased debt.

In addition to domestic production costs, the brand faced intense competition from cheaper Asian imports. The founders noted that their designs were often copied by competitors who outsourced production to Asia to offer lower prices. While production has ceased and employees have been laid off, the brand rights remain with the founder.
