Red Rebane files for insolvency and halts production

Red Rebane, a bag and backpack manufacturer based in Schwerin, Germany, has filed for insolvency and is halting its regular production after 14 years of operation. Founded in 2012 by Christian Karius and Stephan Rodewald, the company specialized in handmade outdoor backpacks and bicycle bags using regional or European materials.

The management cited several factors for the insolvency, including significantly increased costs for materials, energy, and labor. The company also faced challenges from a shortage of skilled workers and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted trade fairs and left the company with excess mask inventory. Additionally, the founders noted that product piracy and cheap imitations produced in East Asia undermined their business model.

While regular production of new bags and backpacks will cease, the brand may continue through other means, such as the ‘Easy EXO’ line and sales of existing stock. However, the company will no longer be able to provide repairs for previously sold Red Rebane products.
