Red Sea maritime tensions threaten global trade and energy security
The Red Sea has emerged as a critical geopolitical flashpoint, impacting global trade, energy security, and digital connectivity. The corridor, which includes the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, facilitates approximately 30 percent of global container trade and the daily transit of about 5 million barrels of oil. Additionally, the region hosts significant undersea internet cables connecting Asia and Europe.
Security tensions have escalated due to increased attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen against maritime vessels. These actions have disrupted regional stability and targeted Saudi Arabian interests, including the Yanbu Port, which serves as a vital alternative for Saudi oil exports when the Strait of Hormuz faces disruptions. In response, Saudi Arabia has expressed support for Yemeni government forces in operations aimed at reclaiming territory from Houthi control, while Houthi forces continue to target Saudi airports, pipelines, and strategic facilities.
