Red Sea Shipping Attacks Prompt Condemnations by Indonesia, India, IMO
Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned recent missile and drone attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, calling them violations of international law, a threat to global trade and a breach of the freedom of navigation principle under UNCLOS. The statement also reiterated Jakarta’s support for a political resolution to the Yemeni conflict.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, speaking at the East Asia Summit in Manila, denounced attacks on seafarers and civilian shipping, emphasizing that international waterways must remain safe and unimpeded. He highlighted the safety of Indian crew members aboard the LPG tanker DISHA after an incident in Iranian waters and urged avoidance of the Strait of Hormuz for Indian vessels until further notice.
The International Maritime Organisation’s Secretary‑General Arsenio Domínguez labeled the Red Sea attacks “indefensible,” warning that they endanger crews, disrupt global supply chains and could lead to a partial closure of the Bab el‑Mandeb Strait, as reflected in rising insurance costs and market‑based risk indicators.
