Reddit confronts AI-driven spam manipulating chatbot responses
Brands and spammers are using Reddit to plant promotional content that AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Google’s tools later scrape and cite. Moderators of the r/biohackers subreddit recently restricted posts about peptides and hormone‑replacement therapy after discovering systematic seeding of sponsored material aimed at influencing AI outputs. The tactic, described as Generative AI‑engine optimization (GEO) or AI‑engine optimization (AEO), expands traditional SEO practices.
A marketing firm named RedRover openly advertises AI agents that mass‑publish content across Reddit and blogs to sway Google and ChatGPT rankings. The accounts involved are crafted to resemble genuine users, with realistic posting histories and timed brand mentions, making detection reliant on pattern recognition rather than fully automated tools. Reddit says its safety team employs automated systems, but moderators note the growing sophistication of the scheme.
In 2024 Reddit updated its robots.txt to block unauthorized AI scrapers and has entered licensing deals with AI companies, including OpenAI, allowing its data to be used for training commercial models. The platform thus faces a paradox of selling data to AI developers while attempting to curb AI‑driven manipulation within its communities.
