Reddit to transition to primarily logged-in user experience

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has announced a strategic shift toward a primarily logged-in experience, marking a significant change for the 21-year-old platform. The company plans to begin testing mandatory login requirements in selected international markets during the fourth quarter of 2026.

The move aims to improve content personalization, enhance advertising targeting through better user data, and protect Reddit’s vast data corpus from unauthorized AI scraping. Huffman noted that the transition is a response to declining search referral traffic, which dropped by more than 1 million weekly referrals in October, partly due to AI-driven search summaries that satisfy user queries without directing traffic to original sources.

While the platform intends to restrict access for unauthenticated visitors, Reddit stated that certain areas, such as the homepage and content accessed via shared links or search engines, may remain accessible. The company is also rolling out new discovery features, including a personalized ‘For You’ feed and a ‘Following’ feed, to encourage user engagement and exploration.
