Reddit to restrict content access to logged-in users

Reddit is transitioning to a model where content access will primarily be limited to users with registered accounts. CEO Steve Huffman confirmed the plan during an investor call, noting that the platform aims to improve user experience by helping individuals more easily find relevant communities and content.

According to Huffman, the shift is intended to protect the company’s database and better align with global regulations. The move also aims to increase data for targeted advertising and boost user activity. Additionally, the company cited the unauthorized collection of data for artificial intelligence training as a factor, noting that most such unauthorized access comes from unlogged users.

The company reported a significant drop in traffic from internet search engines, specifically losing over one million weekly visits from unlogged users. Reddit plans to begin testing this new model in selected markets outside the United States during the fourth quarter.
