Reden mining site begins cultural transformation via Steiger Gallery

The Wassergarten in Reden is undergoing a long-term transformation through the launch of the Steiger Gallery. Starting with a pilot phase from September 25 to October 25, 2026, the project aims to integrate contemporary art with industrial culture to explore new uses for the former mining site.

The initiative is supported by 200,000 euros from the Saarland State Chancellery and an additional 200,000 euros from the Ministry of Education and Culture. Saarland Prime Minister Anke Rehlinger noted that the project is a visible sign of structural change intended to increase the region's tourist appeal and long-term development.

In conjunction with these efforts, the Walter Bernstein Foundation hosted a symposium featuring five artists at the former mine site in Landsweiler-Reden. The symposium, themed ‘Mining from a Today Perspective: From Coal Mining to Experience Park’, explored how contemporary art can interpret the cultural significance of mining heritage, honoring the legacy of artist Walter Bernstein.
