REDHO denounces child labor in Butembo, DRC
The Réseau pour les Droits de l’Homme (REDHO) issued a press release on 7 August 2026, signed by coordinator Maître Muhindo Wasivinywa, warning of a sharp rise in the economic exploitation of children in Butembo and surrounding areas during the school vacation period. The statement notes that national and international law prohibit any form of child labour, yet minors are being employed as drivers or assistants on Bajaj motorcycles and tricycles, as heavy‑hand labourers, and even in the sale of flammable fuels.
REDHO reports that some children and their parents are seeking ways to survive until the new school term begins. The organisation calls on parents and anyone using child workers to cease the practice immediately and urges state authorities to intervene and enforce child‑protection legislation.
