Redland City Council considers expanding MLAK access for public toilets

Redland City Council has announced it will consider expanding the use of the Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) system for accessible public toilets on a site-by-site basis. This response follows calls from disability advocates and the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia to improve secure access to essential amenities.

The MLAK system allows authorized users to unlock participating facilities, which often include features like wheelchair access, adult change tables, and increased privacy. Advocates argue that locked facilities protect these limited resources from misuse, damage, and unhygienic conditions caused by unauthorized users.

Currently, the council has only one MLAK-enabled facility, located at Thornlands Community Park. The council stated that any future expansion will depend on demonstrated community need, location, operating hours, security considerations, and maintenance costs.
