Reed Hastings and wife donate to oppose California voter ID measure

Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin, have made significant donations to oppose Proposition 39, a California ballot measure that would implement strict voter identification requirements.

According to Secretary of State records, Hastings donated $1 million on September 3, while Quillin contributed $1.5 million on August 31. The measure seeks to require voters to provide proof of citizenship and personal identification to vote in person, as well as the last four digits of an identification number for mail-in ballots.

Supporters of Prop 39, including Republican Assemblymember Carl DeMaio, The Transparency Foundation, and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, argue the measure is a bipartisan solution to restore trust in democracy by preventing voter fraud. Opponents, including California Democrats, view the measure as a barrier to voting. A poll from the Public Policy Institute of California indicates that 55% of voters oppose the measure, while 43% support it.
