Reedham swing bridge repairs completed ahead of schedule

Network Rail has completed repairs to the 123-year-old Reedham swing bridge ahead of schedule. The engineering project addressed a major mechanical fault involving the bridge's central bearing, which is a critical component of the main pivot that supports the structure during its opening and closing cycles.

The repair involved removing the old bearing and installing a new one during the August bank holiday weekend. While the bridge was unable to swing for most of the summer, Network Rail and the Broads Authority coordinated three scheduled openings in late July and early August to allow approximately 30 boats to pass. Smaller vessels were able to navigate under the bridge throughout the repair period.

Testing and commissioning were finished early, allowing the bridge to return to full operation before the previously anticipated mid-September date. The bridge serves as both a vital piece of rail infrastructure over the River Yare and a significant regional heritage landmark.
