Referee appointments spark debate in Bolivian and Peruvian football
Controversy has emerged in Bolivia following the appointment of Gabriel Mendoza to referee the match between The Strongest and Always Ready. The decision has drawn scrutiny due to Mendoza’s history, specifically a disputed goal in a previous match between Bolívar and Always Ready that led to a temporary suspension by the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) after VAR audio reviews. Additionally, Mendoza has shown limited activity this season, having officiated only four league matches.
In Peru, Kevin Ortega has been designated by the National Commission of Referees (Conar) to officiate the match between FBC Melgar and Deportivo Garcilaso. The appointment follows a trend where FBC Melgar has struggled under Ortega’s officiating, recording only one win in his previous matches involving the team. Ortega’s disciplinary record for the 2026 season includes 127 yellow cards and 7 red cards across 26 matches.
