Kenya football referee assaulted by fans and players
A football match in Nairobi, Kenya, descended into violence after referee John Sulwe awarded a penalty to Mombasa United during a high-stakes promotion-relegation playoff against Kariobangi Sharks.
Following the decision in the 68th minute, Kariobangi Sharks players surrounded and pushed the official. The situation escalated when dozens of local fans invaded the Ulinzi Sports Complex pitch, initiating a pursuit of the referee. Video footage shows Sulwe being chased by a crowd, receiving punches to the face, and narrowly avoiding being struck by a thrown plastic chair.
The match was suspended as security personnel and police escorted Sulwe to the dressing rooms for safety. The incident occurred amidst a period of intense controversy regarding the league standings, as Kariobangi Sharks had previously challenged their relegation in court. Neither the Kenyan Football Federation nor the involved clubs have issued official statements regarding the assault.
