Referee João Pinheiro addresses Messi confrontation

Portuguese referee João Pinheiro has addressed the widely discussed confrontation with Lionel Messi during the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match between Argentina and Switzerland. Speaking on the ‘Completamente’ podcast, Pinheiro characterized the incident as a brief misunderstanding that lasted approximately 30 seconds.

Pinheiro stated that Messi perceived a comment as a lack of respect, which the official denied. “He perceived something I told him in the wrong way. He thought I had disrespected him, and I didn't; it's something I never do,” Pinheiro explained. He noted that while he attempted to clarify his intent, Messi was unwilling to accept the explanation at that moment.

The referee suggested that the incident gained disproportionate media attention due to Messi’s global status, asserting that “if it were any other player, things would be taken in a more natural way.” Pinheiro emphasized that no further issues occurred with Messi or any other player during the remainder of the 120-minute match.
