Refined carbohydrates and sugar consumption impact skin health

Dermatologist Dr. Esra Deniz Göde has highlighted the impact of refined carbohydrate and sugar consumption on skin health. While noting that carbohydrates are not inherently harmful, she warned that excessive intake of white bread, sugary drinks, sweets, and processed snacks can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar.

These spikes trigger insulin increases that may stimulate oil production and inflammatory processes in the skin. High glycemic index diets are also linked to hormonal changes that can increase acne formation. Furthermore, high blood sugar can trigger glycation, a process where sugar molecules bind to proteins, fats, and DNA, creating advanced glycation end products (AGEs). These compounds can damage collagen and elastin, leading to reduced skin elasticity and more visible signs of aging.

Citing research from the University of Montpellier, Dr. Göde noted that individuals consuming high glycemic index foods may be perceived as having more tired and less vibrant facial appearances. However, she cautioned that facial appearance is influenced by multiple factors, including sleep, stress, genetics, sun exposure, and smoking habits.
