Reflect Orbital plans mirror satellite constellation to reflect sunlight

California-based startup Reflect Orbital plans to launch a constellation of approximately 50,000 mirror-equipped satellites designed to reflect sunlight toward specific locations on Earth. The project aims to provide continuous illumination for solar farms, allowing them to operate 24/7, or to light up construction sites and other areas during the night.

The company has received approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch its first experimental satellite, Eärendil-1, which will feature an 18-square-meter mirror.

While the technology offers potential for expanded solar energy utility, it presents significant environmental and health risks. The concentrated light could reach brightness levels up to four times that of a full moon within the target area. Additionally, there are concerns regarding increased global night sky brightness due to atmospheric scattering and potential risks to human eyesight.
