Refleksdagen marked in Norway to improve pedestrian visibility

Norway is marking Refleksdagen (Reflector Day) on October 15, an annual event aimed at promoting the use of reflectors to increase visibility for pedestrians and cyclists. In Haugesund, the municipality is distributing free reflectors to commuters and students to combat the risks associated with darker autumn days.

Statistics from Finans Norge indicate that October is a particularly dangerous month for soft road users. In October of last year, 111 pedestrians and cyclists were hit by vehicles in Norway, with individuals aged 50 to 64 being the most vulnerable group.

Experts from Frende Forsikring emphasize the life-saving potential of reflectors. At a speed of 50 kilometers per hour, a driver has only approximately two seconds to detect a pedestrian without a reflector, whereas a reflector can make a person visible ten seconds earlier. Research shows that younger demographics are less likely to use reflectors, with 51 percent of those aged 18 to 29 reporting they omit them.
