Reforestation initiatives expand across Germany
Various reforestation initiatives are underway across Germany to combat climate change and restore forest ecosystems.
In Saxony, the Stiftung Wald für Sachsen celebrated its 30th anniversary by planting 1,000 new silver fir trees in the Geyer municipal forest. Since its founding in 1996, the foundation has planted five million trees and established approximately 1,500 hectares of new forest. The organization focuses on creating resilient mixed forests in mining landscapes, urban areas, and flood-prone regions. The anniversary event included regional officials such as Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer.
In the Harz region, over 100 families participated in a collaborative planting event organized by the Stiftung Zukunft Wald and Niedersächsische Landesforsten. Participants planted approximately 2,500 beech and Douglas fir trees across 1.2 hectares. The initiative, held as part of a WDR action day, aimed to engage children and families in the practical work of forest regeneration.
