West African nations launch major 2026 reforestation campaigns
Various West African nations have launched major reforestation campaigns for 2026, emphasizing community responsibility and environmental sustainability.
In Senegal, the national tree day celebrations are underway under the theme "From seedlings to trees: responsibility to communities." Initiatives include distributing 9,500 plants in Kédougou and massive planting goals in Tambacounda, where authorities aim for 700 hectares of plantation. The Prime Minister has also proposed a national prize for local governments to encourage greening efforts.
In Burkina Faso, regional reforestation efforts have begun in the Guiriko region, focusing on the University Nazi Boni site with 500 new plants to restore vegetation cover.
In Côte d'Ivoire, a reforestation and community development project was launched in Zinzenou, supported by OLAM Agri and GPSNR. The project aims to plant 250,000 trees over 250 hectares to combat the significant loss of national forest cover.
