Reform UK proposes cutting social benefits for foreign nationals

Reform UK has proposed a radical overhaul of the British social welfare system, aiming to exclude foreign nationals from receiving benefits. The plan, presented by economic policy spokesperson Robert Jenrick, seeks to restrict access to benefits such as Universal Credit, unemployment benefits, child benefits, housing allowance, and disability support exclusively to British citizens.

Under this proposal, even EU citizens with permanent residency (settled status) in the United Kingdom would be affected. Implementing these changes would necessitate a renegotiation of the post-Brexit withdrawal agreement with the European Union.

Jenrick argued that the current system is unfair to British taxpayers, stating, “The British taxpayer acts as a welfare state for the whole world.” The party estimates that these measures could save the British taxpayer up to £21 billion annually by 2029 if implemented immediately. Exceptions may be made for individuals who have completed military service or have contributed to the state pension system.
