Reform UK proposes deporting foreign prisoners to El Salvador and Kosovo
Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, has proposed a plan to deport approximately 10,000 foreign national offenders from British prisons to third countries to combat severe overcrowding. The party is exploring agreements to rent prison capacity in nations such as El Salvador and Kosovo, suggesting that such arrangements could cost half as much as housing inmates within the UK.
To facilitate this, Reform UK chairman Lee Anderson is expected to lead a delegation to El Salvador in the coming months to hold discussions with President Nayib Bukele’s government regarding the potential use of the country's high-security facilities, including the Terrorism Confinement Center. The party also intends to build temporary, pop-up “Nightingale prisons” to create additional domestic capacity.
Human rights organizations and charities have criticized the proposal, warning that deporting prisoners to countries with poor human rights records could violate international laws against torture and inhuman treatment. Critics have compared the plan to the controversial Rwanda asylum scheme, noting that many of the targeted individuals may still be on remand awaiting trial.
