Reform UK proposes five-year suspension of UK asylum system

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has announced a major policy proposal to suspend the United Kingdom’s asylum system for a full five-year parliamentary term if the party enters government. The plan, titled ‘Restoring Justice’, includes the immediate rejection of all new asylum applications and the voiding of existing claims.

Under the proposal, Reform UK intends to abolish asylum tribunals, legal refugee routes, and resettlement schemes. The party aims to deport approximately 90,000 individuals currently awaiting decisions on asylum and humanitarian protection appeals. Additionally, the party plans to review and potentially overturn refugee grants issued within the last five years.

To facilitate these measures and prevent legal challenges, Reform UK has pledged to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights, repeal the Human Rights Act 1998, and disapply the 1951 Refugee Convention. Farage cited a ‘national security emergency’ as the justification for these actions.

The party also plans to use economic pressure, including tariffs and visa freezes, against nations that refuse to cooperate with British deportation efforts. Political opponents, including Labour’s Bridget Phillipson, have criticized the proposals as an assault on common values and a sign of political desperation.
