Reform UK seeks to demonstrate governance through Havering Council control

Reform UK intends to use its control of Havering Council as a demonstration of its ability to govern effectively within London. Following the May local elections, where the party secured 39 of the 55 seats, Havering became the first Reform UK-run local authority in the capital.

Alex Wilson, the party’s leader on the London Assembly, stated that the borough serves as a flagship to show Londoners that the party can provide a “solid, competent and stable” administration. This approach is seen as a way to navigate London’s unique demographic and political landscape, which differs significantly from the rest of the country.

Keith Prince, a Reform UK assembly member leading the council, noted that initial priorities have included stabilizing finances and addressing long-overdue works at Gallows Corner. While the party’s 13 per cent vote share in May was described by pollsters as an undershoot of expectations, leadership aims to use their local power to act as a beacon for the party’s capabilities both in London and nationally.
