Reformation Day in Germany: History and Observance

Reformation Day, observed on October 31, commemorates the beginning of the Protestant Reformation initiated by Martin Luther. In Germany, the day is a legal holiday in several federal states, including Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, and Schleswig-Holstein. However, it remains a regular working day in states such as Bavaria, Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Hesse.

While Martin Luther is the central figure of the movement, historical accounts also highlight the role of women like Argula von Grumbach. A new historical novel by Silke Halbach, titled ‘Die Reformatorin’, explores the life of von Grumbach, a Franconian noblewoman who actively participated in theological discussions and authored influential pamphlets to support the Reformation during the 16th century.
