Refractive surgery technology advances precision for myopia and astigmatism

Advancements in refractive surgery technology are increasingly focusing on personalized visual experiences, particularly for patients with complex refractive errors like myopia combined with astigmatism.

Alcon Global Technical & Clinical Director Sissimos Lemonis highlighted the ‘PersonalEYES’ solution, which utilizes ray-tracing technology to create a ‘Digital Eye Twin.’ This 3D model simulates light paths to automatically calculate customized ablation profiles, reducing human error and improving predictability for high myopia or asymmetric corneas.

In a separate clinical comparison conducted with Onnuri Smile Eye Clinic, research presented at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) examined the precision of astigmatism correction. The study found that the SMILE Pro procedure, utilizing the Visumax 800, demonstrated higher accuracy in correcting astigmatism compared to standard SMILE surgery. Specifically, the SMILE Pro group showed a higher percentage of patients with residual astigmatism below 0.5 diopters (66% vs 54%) and a significant reduction in under-correction rates.
