Refrigerator and freezer hacks: salt bowl reduces odor, freezer freshens jeans

Placing a bowl of salt in the refrigerator helps absorb moisture and neutralise unpleasant food odors. The salt draws humidity from the fridge interior, making the environment drier and less conducive to odor‑producing bacteria. It can also speed up the melting of ice buildup in freezer compartments, though it does not replace regular cleaning of the appliance.

Putting jeans in the freezer for a few hours is a popular trick to temporarily suppress odors and help preserve colour and shape between washes. The low temperature slows bacterial growth on the fabric, reducing smell without the wear and tear of frequent laundering. Experts note that this method does not remove dirt, sweat or oil, so it should be used only as a supplemental measure. Similar freezer tricks are used to harden and remove stuck gum from clothing or shoes and to make delicate fabrics like silk easier to press.

Both tips are shared widely in household advice circles, but they are intended as complementary measures rather than replacements for proper cleaning and maintenance.
