Food preservation tips for better refrigerator organization

Effective refrigerator organization and specific storage techniques can significantly extend the shelf life of various foods and reduce household waste.

For citrus fruits like lemons, using airtight sealable bags can prevent dehydration and maintain juiciness for up to four weeks. Similarly, cucumbers benefit from being stored in the vegetable drawer wrapped in absorbent paper to manage moisture levels without exposing them to extreme cold.

General refrigerator management involves several key principles:

• Air Circulation: Avoid overfilling the appliance, as air must circulate to maintain uniform temperatures. Overcrowding creates warm zones that accelerate food spoilage. • Temperature Management: Do not place hot food directly into the fridge, as this raises the internal temperature. During heatwaves, it is unnecessary to lower the thermostat; instead, ensure the appliance is in a well-ventilated area within its rated climate class. • Strategic Placement: Store raw meat and fish in the coldest designated areas to prevent cross-contamination. Dairy and cooked leftovers should go in stable, cool sections, while the door is best suited for less sensitive items like condiments. • Inventory Rotation: Use the ‘new in back, old in front’ method to ensure older items are consumed before they expire.
