Refrigerator temperature dials represent cooling intensity, not degrees

Many users mistakenly believe that the numbered dials inside refrigerators indicate specific temperatures in Celsius or Fahrenheit. In reality, these settings represent relative cooling levels by regulating the compressor's power.

Manufacturers such as Samsung and LG confirm that higher numbers signify more intensive operation rather than a specific degree. Setting the dial too high can lead to excessive frost buildup on the interior walls and increased electricity consumption. Conversely, setting it too low may result in food spoiling prematurely.

To optimize efficiency and prevent appliance damage, settings should be adjusted according to the season and ambient kitchen temperature. General recommendations suggest using a lower setting, around 2, during summer, and adjusting between 2 and 4 during autumn, while higher settings may be appropriate for winter.
