Refugee accommodations in Germany undergo changes in Suhl and Erbendorf
The initial reception facility for refugees in Suhl, located at Friedberg, has been completely vacated. The Thuringian Migration Ministry announced that the final three residents were transferred to facilities in Gera and Eisenberg, completing the evacuation ahead of the original November deadline.
At its peak, the Suhl facility housed approximately 1,600 people, a capacity for which the site was not originally designed. This led to documented issues regarding hygiene, social conditions, and frequent police interventions. The removal of the site is expected to reduce local political tensions in the Friedberg district.
In Erbendorf, a container-based refugee facility that had remained unused is being repurposed for temporary use. The construction company Strabag will utilize the site to house regional construction crews. The facility, which can accommodate around 50 people, will remain in standby mode for the Tirschenreuth district until the end of 2027 to ensure capacity is available if needed.
