Refugee resettlement study examines property redistribution and AI tools

A progressive foundation study has examined “property redistribution” as a potential method for increasing immigrant inclusion in rural American communities. The study, which reportedly cost nearly $500,000, analyzed migrant settlement policies in Italy to determine if similar cooperative economic structures and solidarity economies could be applied to U.S. refugee policy.

Additionally, AI-driven tools are being utilized to assist in refugee resettlement. The GeoMatch system, which has received funding from organizations including Google.org, the Rockefeller Foundation, and Schmidt Futures, is used to recommend settlement locations. This technology is being deployed by Global Refuge, a taxpayer-funded agency that reported approximately $154.7 million in U.S. government grant revenue in 2025.

Critics have raised concerns regarding the use of taxpayer funds for these programs and the lack of evaluation regarding how local residents' objections to the scale of arrivals or service capacity are addressed during the integration process.
