Rega rescues mountaineer from Swiss glacier crevasse
On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, a mountaineer was rescued after falling approximately six meters into a crevasse on the Oberaargletscher glacier in Switzerland. The accident occurred at an altitude of roughly 3,100 meters above sea level when the ice and snow surface collapsed beneath the woman.
While the fall was significant, the accumulated snow within the crevasse prevented her from falling deeper, though her lower body became trapped in the snow. Following an alert via the Rega app, a rescue crew from the Wilderswil base was dispatched, supported by mountain rescuers from Alpine Rescue Switzerland.
Rescuers used a tripod system to extract the woman from the crevasse after one rescuer cleared the snow covering her with a shovel. Despite suffering from severe hypothermia, the woman sustained only minor injuries. After receiving initial medical treatment on the glacier, she was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
