Reggia di Caserta to host historical balloon commemoration

On October 7, 2026, the Reggia di Caserta will host ‘Il Volo di Lunardi’ to commemorate the historic 1789 balloon flight by Vincenzo Lunardi. The event, held in Piazza Carlo di Borbone, marks the beginning of the ‘Campania in the Sky 4.0’ project, which aims to promote ballooning culture across six municipalities in the Sannio region through spring 2027.

The commemoration includes a static demonstration of a historical hot air balloon, a replica of the aerostat that first flew before King Louis XVI of France. The display is accompanied by a parade of participants in period costumes to evoke the atmosphere of the Bourbon court.

This event also serves as the official opening for the 38th Fragneto Monforte Balloon Festival, scheduled from October 8 to 11. Local officials noted that the initiative is part of a broader effort to propose ballooning as an intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.
