Reggie Burrows Hodges to debut three museum shows in Los Angeles

Compton-born painter Reggie Burrows Hodges will debut his first Los Angeles museum exhibitions through a simultaneous three-institution presentation starting October 20. The collaborative project involves the J. Paul Getty Museum, the California African American Museum (CAAM), and the nonprofit Art + Practice.

The exhibitions feature new works inspired by Old Master paintings and Hodges’ personal experiences regarding memory, labor, and power. At the Getty, the exhibition ‘Reggie Burrows Hodges: A Theater of Passions’ will display five paintings responding to 17th-century Italian works by Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi.

CAAM will host ‘A Theater of Miracles,’ featuring works influenced by pieces such as Jacopo Bassano’s ‘The Miracle of the Quail.’ Meanwhile, Art + Practice in Leimert Park will present ‘A Theater of Dreams,’ showcasing paintings influenced by Hodges’ childhood in Compton and his travels in Europe. The exhibitions are scheduled to run through late February 2025.
