Calabria dismantles San Ferdinando migrant camp and funds port upgrades
The temporary migrant settlement (tendopoli) in San Ferdinando, Gioia Tauro, was demolished, with bulldozers removing the structures and about 100 occupants being relocated. Regional President Roberto Occhiuto called the operation the end of a “national shame” and stressed that the camp must not be re‑established. Sub‑secretary of State Alfredo Mantovano said 116 regular migrants have already been placed in housing and that up to 400 more will be accommodated shortly.
In parallel, the Committee of Management of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port Authority approved a 2026 budget adjustment that earmarks €200,000 for wreck removal at the port of Corigliano‑Rossano and €150,000 for the design of a pier extension at Vibo Valentia Marina. The adjustment records equal increases of €1,686,786.65 in projected revenues and expenses, bringing total forecasts to €26,370,820.41 in revenues and €101,911,494.65 in expenses. A deficit of €75,540,674.24 will be covered by a €128,900,497.23 surplus from the 2025 administration.
