Reggio Calabria authorities issue measures for firearms intimidation and extortion
Authorities in Reggio Calabria have issued six precautionary measures against individuals suspected of public intimidation using weapons in the Arghillà Nord district. The measures include three house arrests and three bans on residing within the province. The investigation centers on a New Year's Eve incident where suspects, including a minor, allegedly discharged approximately one hundred rounds from two pistols and at least four rifles in a public area. Investigators noted that some shots were fired at human height toward a washing machine used as a target, causing significant alarm among residents.
Additionally, the investigation identified the suspects as responsible for damaging surveillance cameras with gunfire on two separate occasions between January and May 2026.
In a separate criminal matter in the Locride area, a suspect has been ordered into custody for an attempted extortion involving the 'mafia method.' The individual is accused of attempting to extort 3% of the total value of a public contract from a construction company involved in urban green area redevelopment in the Valle del Torbido municipalities.
