Reggio Calabria hotel shut after legionella detection
Health officials in Reggio Calabria confirmed a case of legionellosis and laboratory results showing legionella bacteria above safety limits in a local hotel. The provincial health agency (ASP) director, Maddalena Berardi, emphasized that there is no broader public health alarm and that no other accommodations have been affected.
Mayor Francesco Cannizzaro issued an urgent ordinance suspending the hotel’s operations until thorough decontamination is completed. The ASP has activated standard protocols, including sampling by the regional laboratory (Arpacal) and a remediation plan that requires repeat testing at least 48 hours after cleaning. The hotel may reopen only after certified negative results confirm the absence of the pathogen.
