Reggio Calabria implements new mental health initiative
The Reggio Calabria Provincial Health Authority (ASP) and Third Sector organizations have signed a convention to enhance mental health services under the National Plan for Equity in Health (PNES). This partnership aims to reduce inequalities in access to care by combining clinical and diagnostic guarantees from the public sector with the proximity and social engagement capabilities of volunteer and cooperative entities.
The initiative focuses on creating personalized therapeutic and rehabilitative pathways to move away from standardized assistance toward a community-based welfare model. By utilizing ministerial funds, the project seeks to address psychological distress early and overcome fragmented care through structural synergy between public and social private sectors.
This development follows concerns regarding regional well-being data. Recent Istat reports on Equitable and Sustainable Wellbeing (Bes) indicate that Calabria performs below the national average in ten out of twelve dimensions. Specifically, while some youth report life satisfaction, mental health indices for the 14-24 age group have shown deterioration, highlighting a need for improved services and systemic support.
