Reggio Calabria mayor Francesco Cannizzaro enforces zero‑tolerance waste fines as new council convenes

Francesco Cannizzaro was sworn in as mayor of Reggio Calabria and inaugurated a new municipal council, with Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani delivering a government greeting. The council elected Federico Milia (Forza Italia) as its president and appointed vice‑presidents and secretaries.

Cannizzaro launched the "Piazza Pulita" campaign against illegal waste dumping. In the first ten days the campaign resulted in 100 fines, two denunciations and one arrest for improper waste disposal. Neighborhood committee Santa Caterina‑San Brunello praised the zero‑tolerance stance but demanded the same rigor be applied to the waste‑collection operator, Ecologia Oggi, citing missed weekly pickups, lingering bags, foul odors and waste falling from collection bins onto the street.

Fratelli d'Italia representatives, including Ersilia Cedro, expressed strong support for Cannizzaro’s administration, highlighting the party’s role in the new executive and its commitment to the city’s strategic Mediterranean position.
