Reggio Calabria opens Piazza Garibaldi archaeological site

The archaeological site at Piazza Garibaldi in the historic center of Reggio Calabria has opened to the public for the first time as part of the 2026 European Heritage Days. The site had remained in a state of abandonment following the conclusion of construction work last summer.

Visitors can access the area to view the remains of an Augustan-era temple, potentially dating back to the early Julio-Claudian period of the first century AD. The opening is a limited event, scheduled for a specific morning window during the two-day heritage celebration promoted by the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

The restoration and safety project, funded by the Municipality of Reggio Calabria, was overseen by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria and the province of Vibo Valentia.
