Reggio Calabria proposal seeks Risorgimento Museum at Castello Aragonese

The Anassilaos Cultural Association has proposed the creation of a Risorgimento Museum within the Castello Aragonese in Reggio Calabria. The initiative, presented by Giuseppe Diaco to Mayor Francesco Cannizzaro, aims to revitalize the historic site, which Diaco described as a “splendid empty shell,” and to enhance the city's cultural and tourism offerings.

The proposal seeks to establish a permanent space dedicated to the Risorgimento period in Reggio Calabria, showcasing documents, memorabilia, and testimonies from historical figures. This includes items such as autographs from Garibaldi, Mazzini, and Pisacane, as well as local manuscripts, uniforms, and historical artifacts.

This concept is not new; similar debates occurred in the 1950s. During that decade, local political and cultural figures advocated for a Museum of the Risorgimento and Folk Traditions. In 1955, the City Council unanimously voted to establish such a museum within the castle, though the project did not reach its full intended potential.
